The Basics Of 2-7 Lo-Ball
One very fun poker game that is not very well known is 2-7 Lo-Ball. The game has not received nearly as much attention as some other poker games like hold-em or stud, and is only found in a few poker rooms, but it is out there to be played. If you’re a fan of Lo-Ball games like Razz, or even O8 or Stud Hi-Lo, you may want to give 2-7 a try. It is a fun game that requires a different kind of strategy than traditional poker games.
As you may have guessed by the name, 2-7 is a Lo-Ball game in which players strive to make the lowest possible hand. There are 2 variations of 2-7, Single Draw and Triple Draw. In Single Draw each player is given 1 chance to trade in any number of cards in their hand and draw the same number of new cards from the deck. In Triple Draw, as you may have already guessed, each player is given 3 opportunities to draw for new cards from the deck. It is set up much like 5-Card Draw. The blinds go clockwise around the table each hand, with the small blind (half the amount of the big blind) to the left of the dealer chip, and the big blind to the left of the small blind. These are mandatory bets that must be made before any cards are dealt.
Once the blinds have been placed each player is dealt 5 cards face down and a round of betting takes place, starting with the player to the left of the BB, and continuing around the table clockwise. Once all cards have been established each player, starting with the SB is given the opportunity to either draw, or stand pat. In Triple Draw, play continues in this manner, with rounds of betting in between each draw.
The object of the game is to achieve the lowest possible hand. Aces are considered high I this game, and are therefore undesirable. Any other traditional poker hand, pairs, straights, flushes, and full houses are considered bust hands. So you want to avoid a low straight. As a result the best possible hand is 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 because 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 would make a straight and be a bust hand. Hence the name 2-7.
