Ashton GriffinCongratulations to Ashton Griffin for taking home the 2010 PokerStars NAPT High-Roller tournament. The tournament finished early on Friday, February 26. The final table lasted a whopping 12 hours.

What was different about this event? Well, it was certainly a unique format. The tournament began on Tuesday with seven tables of seven poker players. The simple goal was to win your table. The 7 winners of their table then met at the final table to compete for the championship. All players started at the final table with the same amount (150,000) in chips. Didn’t matter how many chips each had coming in, everyone started on a level playing ground.

Take a quick look at the top 5 from the 2010 PokerStars NAPT High-Roller Bounty Shootout:

  • 1st Place, Ashton Griffin – $560,000
  • 2nd Place, Hoyt Corkins – $100,000
  • 3rd Place, Joe Cassidy – $95,000
  • 4th Place, Scott Seiver – $215,000
  • 5th Place, Faraz Jaka – $95,000

Only one of the PokerStars Pro’s made the final table and that was Peter Eastgate. He finished in 7th place for the tournament.

Peter EastgateThe heads up for the tournament championship came down to Aston Griffin and Hoyt Corkins. Corkins is a veteran to the game and has played in many of tournaments. On the other hand, Griffin is a youngster just trying to make his name in the professional poker world. Once these two got to heads up play, it only took two hands before they were all-in and someone was going home. The final hand was pretty weak in comparison to some hands. Griffin had 9-8 up against Corkins 9-3. The flop hit 4-5-9 and Griffin out kicked Corkins for the win.

A cool feature about this tournament was that part of the goal was to knock people out of the tournament. Players earned money for knocking others out.

Ashton Griffin surely made his name in the poker world and took home a nice check of $560,000. Check back often for more poker tournament news and PokerStars pro news.
